Is the biz you run gonna be fun?
Good morning!
I called this a weekly-ish newsletter, but it's been more than a month, yikes. In June, we wrapped Cosmico Fest, a music festival Anne and I run in Todos Santos and Healdsburg. Then we took a vacation to Sicily at the start of July. Anyway, I’m back.
Today's missive is the last in my five-part series called: Starting Up Now. If you’re starting a business today, you have a blank slate, so please, design the business you want to run.
Wait, shouldn’t I start a business based on my “brilliant idea” 💡?
Of course. Your inspiring idea is the spark. 🧨 But spend a little time envisioning where the fuse will lead and what kind of fire you want to build. 🔥
Here are a few questions to consider:
Do you envision a huge company or a small business?
Do you want to lead hundreds of employees?
Do you value flexibility in location and lifestyle?
Do you want to raise money and owe investors a return?
Do you want to run a business of one, answering only to yourself and your clients?
Do you love your idea so much that you’d do it for free? Or do it for 10 years before you finally find success?
I meet a lot of people who previously ran a VC-funded business and opt for a lifestyle business the second time around. Some people want to reduce complexity. Some people decide they don’t want to run a business but want a job instead. You may be ready to take a big swing.
Whatever it is, I encourage you to think down the road and envision your ideal way to run the business you’re about to start.
Running a business can’t always be fun, but being sure about what you truly want will help increase the odds that you’ll have more fun days doing it.
Wishing you the best…wherever the journey leads you!
